DUI Driver Causes Crash in Sylmar Leaving 3-Year-Old Child in Critical Condition

SYLMAR, CA (August 15, 2023) – A 3-year-old boy was critically injured and Christian Bedolla was arrested after a DUI crash in Sylmar early Friday morning.

The crash happened around 12:50 a.m. on August 11, on 5 Freeway near the intersection with 14 Freeway. According to the California Highway Patrol, the child and his parents were heading northbound in a 2021 Ford Expedition when a 2014 Ford Focus rear-ended their car.

The impact caused the Expedition to lose control and slam into a guardrail on the right shoulder of the freeway. It then hit a concrete pillar under Balboa Boulevard.

Los Angeles Police Department officers responded and tried to provide first aid to the child. Paramedics also arrived and rushed the boy to Northridge Hospital Medical Center in critical condition.

The boy’s parents were also hospitalized with unspecified injuries.

Bedolla, 31, was the driver of the Focus. He was arrested for DUI and driving at an unsafe speed.

Further investigation is underway.
