3 Hurt, Head-On Crash on Highway 101 in Montecito

MONTECITO, CA (March 18, 2024) — Three people suffered significant injuries in Saturday’s head-on accident on Highway 101 at Hot Springs Road.

According to the Santa Barbara City Fire Department, the two-vehicle crash happened around 2:45 a.m. Under unclear circumstances, a driver of a red Chevy Silverado collided with a driver of a tan Chevy Suburban head-on. Subsequently, the impact sent the pickup truck on its side and the Suburban on its wheels.

Minutes later, paramedics responded to the scene and found three people with moderate to severe injuries. Due to their conditions, firefighters from Montecito took the patients to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. Meanwhile, police closed the road for two hours to investigate.

At the time of the report, traffic investigators did not confirm the events before the impact, including which car hopped the freeway divider or entered the highway in the wrong direction. However, a deep dive into the crash should confirm any ambiguous information.

Avoid a traffic collision while you can. Keep in mind your distance from other cars. Drive strategically and avoid circumstances that force you to stop suddenly. Follow road signs to enter highways and interstates in the right direction. Lastly, watch other drivers and steer clear of reckless motorists.
