Police Arrest DUI Hit-and-Run Suspect Margarito Angeles after Fatally Striking Child in Castle Community
SAN DIEGO, CA (September 26, 2022) – A one-year-old girl died in a DUI hit-and-run crash in the Castle community of San Diego on Saturday night, September 24.
The fatal crash happened around 6:45 p.m. in the 3900 block of Redwood Street. According to the San Diego Police Department, the child wandered in the street when a 1999 Toyota 4Runner struck her.
Paramedics rushed the child to a hospital with head injuries. Despite life-saving efforts, the victim did not survive and was declared dead.
The driver of the SUV, 45-year-old Margarito Vargas Angeles, fled the scene after the crash.
A witness provided officers with the suspect’s license-plate number, and they tracked down Angeles in the 7100 block of Peter Pan Avenue in Bay Terraces and took him into custody shortly after 9:30 p.m.
Police booked Angeles into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of murder, drunken driving, hit-and-run, and driving with a suspended license.
