Janette Pantoja and Juan Zavala Died in Single-Car Crash on Highway 20 near Poker Flats Road

 
NEVADA COUNTY, CA (August 23, 2022) — Janette Pantoja and Juan Almanza Zavala died in a solo-car accident on Highway 20 near Poker Flats Road on August 6.
 
According to reports, a caller contacted Gridley Police Department about a crash. Upon responding, police found skid marks on the shoulder of Highway 20 and a vehicle shrouded in brush, making it difficult for drivers to see it from the highway.
 
California Highway Patrol and Nevada County Sheriff’s Office found two people, later identified as 29-year-old Pantoja and 36-year-old Zavala, as the victims.
 
Per reports, both individuals were reported missing since August 7. According to their families, both said they were going to Hot August Nights in Reno — a classic car event — and had planned to return the night of August 7. The two dated for years and still maintained a good relationship, according to their families.
 
Authorities tried to locate their cell phones but could not find them.
 
It’s unclear what drove the accident. However, the California Highway Patrol plans to look into this case more closely. If anyone has information on this accident, please call the CHP.
