Teen Airlifted after Off-Road Vehicle Accident at Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, CA (June 29, 2022) – Four people sustained injuries in an off-road vehicle accident at Oceano Dunes on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened on June 28, shortly after noon. For reasons still under investigation, an off-highway vehicle careened off a 15-foot-tall dune at Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area.

The vehicle reportedly nose-dived into the dune and overturned.

Emergency crews transported the 19-year-old driver and two passengers to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo. Meanwhile, a CHP helicopter transported the fourth victim, a 17-year-old passenger, to Sierra Vista.

Investigators confirmed that the driver and passengers were wearing seat belts and helmets.

CHP believes speed and operator inexperience were factors in the accident. Officers will release additional information once it becomes available.

Before going off-road, take an approved safety training course. Also, drive slowly and stay on the trail to avoid accidents.
