Douglas Payne Arrested, One Dead in DUI Accident on 5 Freeway near Canyon Road

 
CARLSBAD, CA (April 29, 2022) — Officials arrested 51-year-old Carlsbad resident Douglas Lee Payne after a DUI crash on Wednesday, April 27.
 
According to California Highway Patrol Officer Hunter Gerber, the fatal crash happened shortly after 11:15 p.m. on south 5 Freeway near Cannon Road.
 
The victim, a resident of the Sun City neighborhood of Menifee in Riverside County, stood next to his disabled Ford Explorer on the right shoulder of the freeway. Then Payne, who drove a Honda Accord, struck the SUV, Gerber said.
 
The force of the collision caused the SUV to hit the victim. Medics administered life-saving efforts, but the victim succumbed to sustained injuries and died at the scene.
 
Investigators arrested Payne on suspicion of several felony charges. The charges include DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, Gerber said.
 
According to jail records, officials booked Payne on early Thursday morning into the Vista Detention Facility. He remained in jailed without bail Thursday night on suspicion of murder and two counts of DUI resulting in death.
