Police Arrest Pedro Cortez for DUI Hit-and-Run after Fatally Striking Daryl Bagwell in Selma

 
SELMA, CA (April 28, 2022) – A man died while police arrested another man for DUI hit-and-run after a fatal accident in Selma on Friday, April 22.
 
The California Highway Patrol identified the victim as 58-year-old Daryl Bagwell of Selma.
 
The crash happened just after 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of Rose Avenue and Highland Avenue. According to the California Highway Patrol, 27-year-old Pedro Epigmeneo Cortez of Selma drove a Nissan Versa on Rose Avenue. Soon after, Cortez drifted from the eastbound to the westbound lane, where he struck Bagwell.
 
Cortez did not stop to render aid and drove away from the scene.
 
Bagwell died at the scene.
 
A Fresno County Sheriff Deputy was first to arrive on scene and observed a fluid trail leading to the west. In addition, the front bumper from the Nissan, including the license plate, was left at the scene.
 
CHP officers contacted Cortez – also known as Epigmenio Cortez-Pedro – at his residence and conducted a hit-and-run investigation. As a result, they determined that he was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
 
Officers arrested and booked into the Fresno County jail. He is charged with multiple felony charges. In addition, ICE officials stated Cortez was deported four years before the crash.
