DUI Crash in Plumas County Injures 6, William Barnard Arrested

 
PLUMAS COUNTY, CA (July 30, 2021) – Police arrested William Barnard after a DUI crash on Highway 70 early Sunday morning.
 
The accident happened around 12:38 a.m. on July 25, just east of Maddalena Road. According to the California Highway Patrol, the 22-year-old man from Reno, Nevada, was driving a 2007 Toyota 4-Runner eastbound on the highway.
 
Due to Barnard’s level of intoxication, he fell asleep and allowed his SUV to drift into the westbound lane. He then collided with a 2021 Audi, driven by 69-year-old Leonard Leavitt of Maclean, Virginia, carrying four other passengers.
 
As a result, the Toyota overturned several times and came to rest on its wheels on the north shoulder of the highway. The Audi came to rest on its wheels on the south shoulder.
 
Fire personnel extricated several occupants from the Audi due to extensive damage to the passenger compartment. All five occupants of the Audi were transported to Renown Medical Center with moderate injuries.
 
Barnard suffered major injuries. Police later arrested him for DUI.
 
An investigation into this crash is ongoing.
