SUTTER COUNTY, CA (May 4, 2021) – A man was killed in a train accident on Highway 99 in Sutter County Monday evening, May 3.

The accident happened around 9:05 p.m. at Clark Road south of Live Oak. According to the California Highway Patrol, the man was driving a Nissan Sentra eastbound when he allegedly drove through the railroad crossing arms directly into the path of a northbound Union Pacific train.

The train struck the right side of the Nissan, ejecting the driver.

As a result, the man died at the scene. Authorities only identified him as a 59-year-old Oroville resident. They withheld his name pending notification of next of kin.

The railroad crossing arms were down and functioning properly at the time of the accident.

Officials closed Clark Road just west of Highway 99 for several hours while Union Pacific crews checked the train and the cars, and to facilitate cleanup.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this fatal crash, which remains under investigation.
