Baby Among Dead in Head-On Crash on 5 Freeway in Merced County

 
MERCED COUNTY, CA (December 23, 2024) — A woman and a baby were killed in a head-on accident on the 5 Freeway near Highway 165.
 
California Highway Patrol officers responded to the deadly two-car accident around 6:30 p.m. Upon dispatch near Los Banos, officers learned that a southbound Jeep crossed over the center median and struck a northbound Dodge head-on.
 
The impact forced a woman and a baby to be thrown from the Jeep. Tragically, they died from their injuries. The Jeep driver, Dodge driver and a female Dodge passenger suffered major injuries in the accident.
 
Paramedics took the surviving patients to a nearby hospital for immediate care. Following an investigation, officers determined that alcohol and/or drugs factored into the cause.
