Tow Truck Driver Hospitalized in 55 Freeway Accident in Costa Mesa
COSTA MESA, CA (August 20, 2024) — A tow truck driver was hit and injured by a car on the 55 Freeway near the 405 Freeway Monday morning.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the high-speed accident happened around 2:30 a.m. For unknown reasons, a driver of a two-door black sedan was moving at a high rate of speed when it plowed into a tow truck driver standing outside of the tow truck.
Subsequently, bystanders pulled over to assist the injured who suffered major injuries including the loss of his left leg.
Due to the crash, authorities issued a SigAlert around 3:09 a.m. for the northbound side of the freeway. If anyone has more information on this incident that could help detectives, contact at the CHP.
Take care when driving late at night. It may be difficult to see cars pulled over or pedestrians near the road. Slow down during limited visibility. Pedestrians should also take care and maximize their visibility by using well-lit roads or wearing bright-colored clothing.
