Elderly Man Dies 11 Days Later after Struck by Teen Driver in Fresno
FRESNO, CA (September 12, 2023) – Thomas Zapata Jr. was killed in a pedestrian accident in Fresno on August 26.
The fatal accident happened around 5:30 p.m. at East Bullard Avenue and North First Street. According to Fresno police, a teen driver was heading westbound on Bullard Avenue making a northbound turn onto First Street. As they proceeded into the intersection, they struck Zapata who was in the crosswalk.
First responders found Zapata lying on the ground with significant injuries. They rushed him to Community Regional Medical Center in critical condition.
Despite life-saving efforts at the hospital, Zapata was pronounced dead Wednesday last week on September 6. He was 70 years old from Fresno, according to the Fresno County Coroner’s Office.
Police said the teen driver was in possession of a permit and not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
