Thomas Sousa II Fatally Hit by Driver on Highway 120 After Crashing Into Police Car, Leaping Off Main Street Overcrossing
MANTECA, CA (January 10, 2025) — Thomas Sousa II jumped off the Main Street overcrossing and was hit by an oncoming driver on Highway 120.
According to the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner’s Office, 31-year-old Thomas Michael Sousa II passed away in the incident. Reports said the man might have been unhoused.
The fatal incident happened around 2:16 a.m. on Wednesday. A Manteca Police officer spotted a car weaving back and forth behind him. Subsequently, the officer pulled over, thinking the driver was trying to get his attention. However, after exiting the car, the officer kept his distance after the motorist — Sousa, who also exited his vehicle — began behaving strangely.
From there, Sousa reentered his vehicle and rammed into the patrol car with the officer inside and deploying the airbags. The officer suffered injuries in the accident.
Moments later, another officer responded to the incident and found Sousa on the Main Street overcrossing. Sousa leaped off the edge and landed on the westbound lanes of Highway 120 where an oncoming pickup struck him.
He died in the crash.
At this time, the California Highway Patrol is investigating the details. Anyone with information can call the Manteca Police Department at 209-456-8101.
