46-Year-Old Man Dies after Crash with Hit-and-Run Driver in Phelan
PHELAN, CA (December 17, 2024) – Roy Austin Johnson Jr. was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Phelan late Monday afternoon on December 16.
The fatal crash happened around 5:05 p.m. on Phelan Road near Windermere Road. According to the California Highway Patrol, 57-year-old Mitchel Ray Leftwich was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Express G2500 with an attached two axle flatbed trailer. He was traveling eastbound on Phelan Road at an undetermined speed.
At the same time, Johnson was driving a 2005 Toyota Avalon westbound on Phelan Road, also at an undetermined speed.
For unknown reasons, the Chevrolet crossed over the painted solid double yellow lines into the opposing lane and towards the Toyota’s path of travel.
Johnson was unable to make evasive actions and struck the side of a black flatbed 2-axle trailer.
As a result of the crash, Johnson suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. He was 46 years old.
Meanwhile, Leftwich fled the scene, which led to a police pursuit that ended with a PIT maneuver near Capelin and Mesquite roads.
Police later arrested him, who sustained minor injuries.
Leftwitch’s bail has been set at $350,000. His charges included DUI gross vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run causing injury.
Authorities urged anyone with further information to contact the CHP’s Victorville Office at 760-241-1186.
We send our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Roy Johnson Jr.
