High-Speed Pursuit Ends in Clairemont Mesa East Crash, Killing Police Officer and Teen
CLAIREMONT MESA EAST, CA (August 30, 2024) – A San Diego police officer Austin Machitar was killed when a high-speed pursuit ended in a fiery crash in Clairemont Mesa East late Monday evening.
The fatal crash happened just after 11:30 p.m. in the area of 5200 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard at Doliva Drive. According to the San Diego Police Department, they attempted to stop a BMW sedan traveling at a high rate of speed along Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, but the driver failed to yield.
Two officers in a police car pursued the suspect. That was when the car collided at a high rate of speed into the side of the patrol vehicle.
Machitar, 30, was the one driving the patrol vehicle. He suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.
The suspect, 16-year-old Edgar Giovanny Oviedo of San Diego, also succumbed to his injuries at Sharp Memorial Hospital.
The second officer in the patrol vehicle, 27-year-old Officer Zachary Martinez, remains in critical condition at the hospital.
An investigation into this crash is ongoing.
