Jogger Dies after Struck by Hit-and-Run Driver in Ocean Beach
OCEAN BEACH, CA (December 8, 2024) – Michael Casey Ellis was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Ocean Beach early Thursday morning on December 5.
The fatal crash happened just before 5:00 a.m. at the intersection of Nimitz Boulevard and West Point Loma Boulevard. According to the San Diego Police Department, Ellis was jogging westbound on West Point Loma Boulevard when he crossed Nimitz Boulevard. That was when a BMW sedan traveling southbound on Nimitz Boulevard struck him.
After the crash, the driver of the BMW fled the scene without stopping.
Witnesses told officers the BMW appeared to be racing with a white Ford Mustang. Both vehicles were seen traveling upwards of 60 miles per hour in a 45 miles per hour zone.
Ellis suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. He was 30 years old of Point Loma, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Later in the morning, US Navy police officers found a damaged 2018 BMW abandoned on Canon Street, about a mile south of the crash site. The vehicle had significant front-end damage and a shattered windshield.
