23-Year-Old Passenger Dies after Car Crashes on 805 Freeway in Chula Vista

 
CHULA VISTA, CA (August 18, 2024) – Matthew Mitiku killed in a car accident in Chula Vista Friday morning on August 16.
 
The fatal accident happened around 6:45 a.m. on northbound 805 Freeway, just north of Telegraph Canyon Road. According to the California Highway Patrol, a white Toyota Corolla was traveling northbound when it veered off the freeway and struck a concrete pillar. The car then hit the base of the H Street and Bonita Road exit sign.
 
Mitiku was a rear-seat pasenger of the car. He suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. He was a 23-year-old Newark resident, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
 
The driver of the car, 22-year-old Joel Tesfai of Oakland, and another passenger, 50-year-old Johannes Sorensen, suffered critical injuries.
 
A GoFundMe page was set up for the victims’ funeral and medical expenses.

Alcohol and drugs are not suspected factors in this crash.
