Head-On Crash on Highway 299 near Essex Lane Kills One and Seriously Injures Another
HUMBOLDT COUNTY, CA (September 24, 2024) – A man died in a head-on accident on Highway 299 in Humboldt County Saturday morning on September 21.
The fatal accident happened around 7:30 a.m. just east of Essex Lane. According to the California Highway Patrol, a 1994 Jeep was traveling eastbound on Highway 299, approaching a curve in the roadway. The male driver was unable to manipulate the curve and left the eastbound lanes, entering the westbound lanes.
The Jeep then collided head-on into a 2020 Ram pickup truck, driven by 75-year-old Fredrick Sundberg Sr. of Willow Creek.
As a result, both drivers suffered major injuries.
Paramedics rushed both of them to Saint Joseph Hospital in Eureka, where the driver of the jeep later died. Authorities only identified him as a Fortuna man.
It was unknown if alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. Further investigation is underway.
