Driver Killed in Merced County 2-Car Collision on Highway 99

MERCED COUNTY, CA (October 21, 2024) — A man died in a 2-car accident on Highway 99 at Shanks Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the deadly two-vehicle collision happened around 7:01 p.m. on October 12. For reasons that require further investigation, the two vehicles crashed at the southbound Shanks Road off-ramp of Highway 99.

A 26-year-old Sacramento resident had just exited the off-ramp and stopped at the posted stop sign. However, the 2013 Hyundai driver proceeded into the intersection, failing to yield to an oncoming 1996 Chevrolet pickup truck traveling at 50 mph. As a result, the two vehicles collided.

Soon after, CHP officers and paramedics responded and took the gravely injured Chevrolet driver to a hospital where the 60-year-old passed away on October 17. The Hyundai driver suffered minor injuries and stayed at the scene for the investigation.

CHP officers do not believe alcohol or drugs factored into the crash, but they are investigating the details further.

Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of the victim.
