23-Year-Old Woman Dies after Struck by Hit-and-Run Driver in Carlsbad
CARLSBAD, CA (September 11, 2024) – Karla Stephanie Levya was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Carlsbad early Tuesday morning on September 10.
The fatal crash happened around 12:37 a.m. in the 2200 block of Las Palmas Drive. According to the CHP, 26-year-old Jose Manuel Zambrano Cruz was driving a Volkswagen Jetta at a high rate of speed when he crashed into three cars and a pedestrian.
After the crash, Cruz fled the scene without rendering aid.
The pedestrian suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office identified Levya as the fatal victim. She was 23 years old.
Authorities later found Cruz and arrested him on suspicion of felony hit and run, DUI causing injury or death and vehicular manslaughter. They booked him into the Vista Detention Facility.
