Passenger Dies after SUV Crashes into Tree in Pico Union

 
PICO UNION, CA (September 23, 2024) – Juan Ortiz was killed in a car accident in the Pico Union community of Los Angeles Saturday morning on September 21.
 
The fatal accident happened around 5:05 a.m. just east of Hoover Avenue. According to the California Highway Patrol, a Toyota 4Runner was traveling westbound when it veered off the freeway and struck a tree.
 
Ortiz was the sole passenger in the car. He suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. He was 29 years old, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office.
 
The 27-year-old driver was hospitalized with major injuries.
 
Crews issued a SigAlert in the area, closing the freeway conversion road connecting the southbound 110 Freeway to the westbound 10 Freeway while they cleared the wreckage.
 
The cause of the crash and factors involved are still under investigation.
