Head-On Crash on Highway 89 in Sierra County Sends 3 Men to Hospital

 
SIERRA COUNTY, CA (July 31, 2023) – James Sweeney, Ian Baxter and Mark O’Camb were injured in a head-on accident in Sierra County Saturday afternoon on July 29.
 
The accident happened around 2:18 p.m. on Highway 89 at the Calpine Summit. CHP officials said Sweeney, an 80-year-old Los Gatos resident, crossed over the median into oncoming southbound traffic. He then slammed head-on into a truck, carrying Baxter and O’Camb.
 
Baxter, 55, and O’Camb, 51, were taken to the hospital along with Sweeney with unspecified injuries.
 
It is unknown if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. Further investigation is underway.
 
The California Highway Patrol is still investigating the cause of the crash and factors involved.
