84-Year-Old Palm Desert Man Dies after Crashing Head-On with Pickup Truck on Highway 247 in Lucerne Valley
LUCERNE VALLEY, CA (July 17, 2024) – David Bell was killed in a head-on accident in Lucerne Valley Monday afternoon on July 15.
The fatal accident happened around 2:25 p.m. on Highway 247, just east of Rattlesnake Canyon Road. According to the California Highway Patrol, Bell was driving a 2024 Toyota Prius southbound on the highway. At the same time, a 2019 Ford F-550 pickup truck carrying canisters of propane was traveling northbound.
For unknown reasons, the Prius crossed over the painted solid double yellow lines into the northbound traffic lane. It then crashed head-on with the Ford. The impact caused the Prius to burst into flames.
Despite wearing a seat belt, Bell was thrown from the car and onto the roadway. He suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. He was an 84-year-old Palm Desert resident, according to the San Bernardino County Coroner.
The pickup truck rolled over and came to rest on a dirt shoulder. The driver, a 35-year-old Adelanto man, as well as a 52-year-old male passenger from Apple Valley sustained moderate injuries.
Authorities are still investigating the crash. They asked witnesses urged to contact the CHP’s Victorville Office at 760-241-1186.
We send our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of David Bell.
