Newport Beach Woman Dies in DUI Crash in Huntington Beach, Christopher Johnstone Arrested
HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA (June 10, 2021) – Chanel Garcia died Friday after a DUI crash in Huntington Beach on Memorial Day, May 31.
The accident happened around 5:58 p.m. on Beach Boulevard, just north of Liberty Drive. According to Huntington Beach police, the 26-year-old Newport Beach woman was riding her motorcycle southbound on Beach Boulevard when she slowed for a traffic signal.
At the same time, 26-year-old Christopher Johnstone of Costa Mesa was driving a white 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe. He failed to yield for Garcia and collided with the rear of her motorcycle.
As a result, Garcia suffered significant injuries and was taken to a local trauma center in critical condition. She died Friday, June 4.
Johnstone remained on scene after the crash. Police arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs.
After Garcia’s death, Johnstone is charged with one felony count of DUI, causing injury, one misdemeanor count of possession of a controlled substance, and one misdemeanor count of destroying, erasing or concealing evidence.
He pleaded not guilty to all charges on Wednesday. He is currently out on a bond of $60,000.
