DUI Hit-and-Run Crash in Willowbrook Kills 1 Passenger and Injures 4 Others
WILLOWBROOK, CA (July 8, 2024) – Brenda Mejia was killed in a DUI hit-and-run crash in Willowbrook early Saturday morning on July 6.
The fatal crash happened around 12:45 a.m. at the intersection of Central Avenue and El Segundo Boulevard. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Century station, 32-year-old Kimberly Dunne of Los Angeles was driving a 2012 Toyota southbound on Central Avenue. At the same time, a 2012 Infiniti was going northbound on Central Avenue.
The Infiniti made a left turn onto westbound El Segundo Boulevard, while the 2012 Toyota continued southbound through the intersection. That ended in a broadside crash.
Mejia, a passenger in the Infiniti, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.
Paramedics took 20-year-old Sharlyn Vaca, also a passenger in the Infiniti, to St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood with moderate injuries.
Two juvenile passengers in the Toyota had moderate and major injuries.
The driver of Infiniti fled the scene on foot. Authorities only described him as a male.
Dunne was treated for moderate injuries at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance. Deputies later arrested her. It was not immediately clear what charges she might face.
Alcohol and/or drugs are believed to be a factor in the crash.
An investigation is underway. Deputies asked anyone with further information to call the CHP’s South Los Angeles office at 424-551-4000 or the agency’s Los Angeles Traffic Management Center at 323-259-3200.
We send our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Brenda Mejia.
