Cyclist Hospitalized after Santa Barbara Accident at State Street and Mission Street

 
SANTA BARBARA, CA (May 24, 2024) – A bicyclist sustained serious injuries in an accident on State Street, Tuesday afternoon.
 
According to the Santa Barbara Police Department, the incident happened on May 21, at about 1:42 p.m. Due to unknown circumstances, a vehicle and a bicycle collided at the intersection of State Street and Mission Street.
 
An on-duty SBPD officer and an off-duty firefighter were in the area at the time of the collision and stopped to render aid to the bicyclist.
 
Emergency responders later transported the victim to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
 
Meanwhile the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
 
Investigators ruled out driving under the influence as a factor in the collision. The SBPD Critical Accident Reconstruction Team will be assisting the investigation.
 
Exercise increased caution at intersections, as they are statistically prone to accidents. Look for cyclists before making turns or proceeding through an intersection. Always yield the right of way to cyclists in accordance with traffic rules.
