Bennie Womack Detained in Deadly Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Crash on Sweetwater Road near Cypress Street

 
NATIONAL CITY, CA (October 1, 2024) — Bennie Womack faces charges following a fatal hit-and-run pedestrian accident on Sweetwater Road near Cypress Street.
 
According to National City Police, the deadly hit-and-run happened around 2:30 a.m. Saturday. Under unclear circumstances, a driver struck a 30-year-old victim crossing the street in the 2400 block of Sweetwater Road. The driver of the dark-colored SUV pulled over briefly before moving the victim to the side of the road. From there, the driver fled.
 
Moments later, paramedics arrived and took the victim to Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego where the individual passed away. Officials did not release his or her name pending notification of family members.
 
Roughly eight hours after the crash, officers arrested the driver — 43-year-old Bennie Ray Womack, of San Diego. However, officials did not disclose how they identified him as the suspected hit-and-run driver.
