TWENTYNINE PALMS, CA (January 28, 2025) – Authorities identified 31-year-old Benjamin Perez of Twentynine Palms as the driver killed in a hit-and-run crash on Highway 62, Tuesday afternoon.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened on January 14, at about 4:15 p.m. An eastbound Chevrolet Silverado reportedly changed lanes at a high rate of speed right in front of a Nissan.

The driver of the Nissan steered to the right to avoid a collision. However, the vehicle lost control and hit the right front of the Silverado.

As per reports, the Nissan also struck a Burrtec trash truck before colliding with a Tesla Model Y near Kerr Avenue.

Officers pronounced the Nissan driver, later identified as Perez, dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, the driver of the Tesla suffered minor injuries and was transported to Hi-Desert Medical Center. The driver of the Burrtec truck did not sustain injuries.

Responders confirmed that the driver of the Silverado immediately left the area. Investigators described the suspect vehicle as a dark green Chevrolet Silverado with an extended cab or four-door. Additionally, it has step rails, a missing front license plate, and possibly a 4X4 decal on the left rear of the bed.

Anyone with information about the driver or the Chevrolet is asked to call the Morongo Basin CHP Office at (760) 366-3707.
