Police Pursuit Ends in Crash in Rancho Cucamonga Leaving Teen Uber Passenger Paralyzed
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA (October 20, 2024) – Aadan Portillo was left paralyzed when a police chase ended in a crash in Rancho Cucamonga on October 5.
The crash happened at the intersection of Foothill Boulevard and Etiwanda Avenue. According to the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department, Portillo and three of his friends had ordered an Uber ride to go to In-N-Out.
As their Uber car proceeded into the intersection, the driver of a white Nissan Altima who was fleeing from police ran a red light and slammed into their car.
Responding paramedics transported a total of six people, including the two occupants of the suspect’s vehicle, to a hospital.
Portillo, 15, was left paralyzed from the chest down after the crash. He endured an eight-hour surgery where doctors removed the fifth cervical vertebra in his neck and replaced it with a spacer to stabilize his neck.
His friends suffered non-serious injuries.
Meanwhile, Portillo’s family has set up a GoFundMe page for his medical expenses.
Police said the pursuit suspect was wanted for possible DUI and was arrested at the scene.
An investigation into this crash is underway.
