2 Die After Car Crashes Into Patrol Car on Niles Street in Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, CA (October 14, 2024) — Two people died in a car accident involving a police vehicle on Niles Street and Kern Street.

According to Bakersfield Police officers, the deadly two-car crash happened around 5:40 a.m. Sunday. For an unknown reason, a driver speeding northbound on Kern Street ran a stop sign and crashed into a patrol vehicle.

As a result of the impact, the driver of the car was ejected and died at the scene. A passenger in the same car suffered life-threatening injuries and died later at a hospital. A 2-year-old in the same vehicle sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash, as well.

After the accident, paramedics brought the two officers to a hospital for treatment of minor to moderate injuries.

At this time, the Kern County Coroner’s Office has yet to release the fatal victims’ names, and the Bakersfield Police have yet to identify the leading cause. Thus far, officers believe alcohol may have possibly played a part pending toxicology reports.

We extend our sincere sympathies to the families and friends of the victims.
