Fatal Crash with Tree on Highway 9 in Santa Cruz County

SANTA CRUZ, CA (October 21, 2024) — A driver died after his car crashed into a tree during a chase on Highway 9 near Two Bar Road Thursday.

The California Highway Patrol officers said that a man crashed into a tree on Highway 9 north of Boulder Creek. For an unknown reason, a California State Parks ranger tried pulling over a 2014 Mazda3 driver at Two Bar Road. However, the driver did not comply, and a brief chase unfolded. Subsequently, the Mazda driver veered off the road and crashed into a tree. Since the driver was not wearing a seat belt, the 36-year-old Boulder Creek driver suffered severe injuries and passed away at the scene.

Authorities did not indicate the leading cause of the accident but believe DUI played a role.

An investigation into the details should confirm any outstanding information.
