Alvaro Gamboa Killed, Deputy Injured, and Joana Lomeli Arrested in Car Accident on Garvey Avenue

 
SOUTH EL MONTE, CA (January 24, 2022) — 66-year-old Alvaro Gamboa died in a car crash after his girlfriend struck him on Wednesday, January 19.
 
The incident started at around 11:15 p.m. when two deputies drove on the 9600 block of Garvey Avenue. They saw Gamboa and his girlfriend Joana Lomeli, 29, fighting in a shopping center parking lot.
 
They detained Gamboa and then tried to detain Lomeli. However, she jumped into a Chevrolet Suburban and started to drive away from the parking lot.
 
Authorities said she made a U-turn driving toward the deputies, fatally hitting Gamboa. She also as hit and injured the deputy and a radio car before she fled.
 
A short police chase ensued and ended when her SUV became disabled. Officials arrested the Baldwin Park woman on suspicion of murder and assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.
 
The deputy received treatment for an injured leg.
 
Officials hold Lomeli in custody in lieu of a $2 million bail.
