Passenger Zakarius Brown Dies in DUI Crash Off Highway 99 in Galt, Jonathan Ratta Arrested

GALT, CA (February 11, 2021) – Police arrested 28-year-old Jonathan Ratta after a deadly DUI accident late Thursday evening in central Galt.

40-year-old Zakarius Brown was Ratta’s passenger who died in the fatal car crash shortly before 10:30 p.m. Thursday on Highway 99, just north of the Central Galt exit ramp, according to the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.

Ratta, a Lathrop resident, was driving a BMW sedan along Highway 99 at approximately 80 to 90 mph in heavy rain. He was speeding up the highway when the car began to skid across the road. The car went up the embankment and continued until the front passenger side door struck a large tree.

The impact caused the car to overturn on its roof in a grassy area, just north of the C Street overcrossing.

Passenger Brown, who was not wearing a seat belt, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

A second passenger sustained minor injuries.

Ratta fled the scene on foot. A Galt police officer caught him about 100 yards away and arrested him for driving while intoxicated. He had minor injuries.

In addition, a pistol with a large magazine and no serial number was found in the car.

An investigation into this fatal crash is ongoing.

We would like to express our sincere condolences to the bereaved family and friends of Zakarius Brown.
