Woman Killed, Man Arrested in DUI Accident on 880 Freeway near Whipple Road [Hayward, CA]

DUI Accident on 880 Freeway in Hayward Kills 1 Passenger and Sends 3 Others to Hospital

 
HAYWARD, CA (November 30, 2021) – A woman died in a DUI accident on 880 Freeway in Hayward early on Sunday morning.
 
The accident happened just before 3:00 a.m. on November 28 along the southbound lanes of the freeway just north of the Whipple Road off-ramp. According to the California Highway Patrol, a Tesla SUV hit a Volkswagen sedan parked on the right shoulder of the freeway. The impact sent the Volkswagen into the left lanes, where it was struck by two other vehicles.
 
As a result of the crash, the female passenger in the Volkswagen suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.
 
Police arrested the driver of the Tesla, a 25-year-old San Jose man, on suspicion of driving under the influence.
 
Meanwhile, three other people in the Tesla and the driver of the Volkswagen were hospitalized.
 
CHP officials said the Tesla was not on autopilot at the time of the crash. Further investigation is underway.
