Police Arrest DUI Suspect after Fatal Head-On Crash in El Centro

 
EL CENTRO, CA (November 26, 2022) – A woman died and police arrested Joseph Zhou after a DUI crash in El Centro Sunday on November 20.
 
Around 5:53 p.m., the 24-year-old suspect from San Marcos was driving a 2022 Toyota Tacoma westbound on 8 Freeway when he entered the center median for unknown reasons. He then traveled into the eastbound lanes of the freeway, just west of Dunaway Road.
 
The Tacoma subsequently collided head-on with a 2020 Kia Forte, driven by a 20-year-old woman from Rahway, New Jersey.
 
As a result, the woman suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. She was not yet identified.
 
Zhou sustained major injuries and was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center via Mercy Air. Police later arrested him for felony driving under the influence causing injury or death and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
 
All parties were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.
 
The Imperial County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation.
