Pedetrian Dies after Struck by Minivan on 580 Freeway in East Oakland, Police Arrest Driver for DUI

 
OAKLAND, CA (May 28, 2022) – A 20-year-old woman died in a DUI pedestrian accident on 580 Freeway in East Oakland on Thursday evening, May 26.
 
The fatal accident happened around 10:42 p.m. near Edwards Avenue. According to the CHP, the female pedestrian was walking on the freeway when a Dodge Caravan entering the westbound lanes struck her.
 
After hitting the woman, the driver of the minivan drove to a gas station on Seminary Avenue where the CHP was called.
 
The woman suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. She was not yet identified.
 
Police arrested the driver on suspicion of being under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
 
Crews issued a SigAlert in the area, closing one lane of the freeway. The alert was lifted at 1:31 a.m. Friday and the lane reopened.
 
The California Highway Patrol is still investigating the fatality. They urged anyone with further information to call the Oakland CHP office at 510-457-2875.
