Woman Killed, Children Among Wounded in Multi-Car Pileup on 5 Freeway in Encinitas
ENCINITAS, CA (April 11, 2023) — A woman died, and children suffered moderate injuries in a multi-car crash on the 5 Freeway near Encinitas Boulevard.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the multi-car pileup happened around 10:45 a.m. Monday. For unknown reasons, a 40-year-old woman driving a white Chrysler Pacifica in the No. 1 southbound lane veered to the right shoulder. Subsequently, the minivan struck a gray Honda Civic, sending both vehicles into the right shoulder guardrail. An oncoming semi-truck then struck the Chrysler and Honda, causing the Chrysler minivan to overturn into the path of a Ford Explorer.
Due to the events of the crash, a 33-year-old Chrysler passenger died from her injuries.
Moments later, emergency personnel took the Chrysler driver, a passenger and an infant to a local hospital with moderate to major non-life-threatening injuries. In addition, three children in the Honda Civic were taken to a local hospital for minor to moderate injuries.
Authorities do not know what led to the accident or the factors contributing to it. However, an investigation should confirm any unclear details.
