Alameda County Supervisor Wilma Chan Dies after Hit by Vehicle

 
ALAMEDA, CA (November 3, 2021) – Alameda County Supervisor Wilma Chan was killed after being struck by a vehicle Wednesday morning.
 
The accident happened just after 8:00 p.m. on November 3, at Grand Street and Shore Line Drive. According to the Alameda Fire Department, Chan had been walking her dog Maggie when a vehicle struck her.
 
Responding paramedics rushed her to Highland Hospital in Oakland, where she succumbed to her injuries at 2:30 p.m.
 
The driver who struck Chan stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
 
Chan was 72 years old, a trailblazing Asian American politician. She represented the county’s District 3, which includes Alameda, San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Hayward Acres, part of Ashland and part of Oakland.
 
She was first elected to the Board of Supervisors in 1994, and then served in the California State Assembly from 2000 to 2006, becoming the first Asian American person to hold the position of Assembly Majority Leader when she took that role from 2002 to 2004.
 
An investigation into this fatal crash is ongoing.
