Mother Mary Henderson and Daughter Willa Henderson Die, Another Pedestrian Injured in San Francisco Crash

SAN FRANCISCO (May 25, 2022) — A mother and daughter from Florida died after a taxi cab crashed onto a sidewalk in San Francisco on Sunday, May 22.

The San Francisco Police Department identified the victims as 72-year-old Mary Henderson and 31-year-old Willa Henderson, both from Vero Beach, Florida. The two were mother and daughter, respectively.

The two woman were visiting San Francisco for a friend’s wedding when the accident occurred shortly after 4:30 p.m. According to police, a yellow cab collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Mission Street and 3rd Street.

They were standing near The Grove at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts when the driver of a northbound Mercedes on 3rd Street attempted a right turn from the center lane, toward a taxi that was cruising in the red lane for buses and cabs, also headed north.

As a result, the taxi veered onto the northeast corner of the sidewalk, attempting to avert a sideswipe. Though the taxi driver managed to avoid eight pedestrians, he jumped the curb and struck three – Willa, Mary, and Mary’s husband, Wayne Henderson.

Willa and Mary were pinned under the taxi and died at the scene.

Wayne Henderson suffered multiple fractures and a severe head injury. As a result, he is currently in intensive care at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital.

The driver of the cab and the other car that was hit stayed at the scene and are cooperating with the investigation, police said.

Police are continuing the investigation.

Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the bereaved families and friends of Mary Henderson and Willa Henderson.
