Small Plane Crashes on San Diego Freeway Hurting Grandmother and 7-Year-Old Child Inside SUV

SAN DIEGO, CA (August 31, 2021) – Grandmother Victoria Roberts and 7-year-old Evie sustained injuries after a small plane crashed on 5 Freeway Tuesday, August 24.

The crash happened just after noon in the freeway’s southbound lanes at Via De La Valle. According to the Federal Aviation Administration and CHP, the single-engine Piper PA-32 had taken off from San Diego and was headed for La Jolla when it began having mechanical trouble. The small plane then made an emergency landing.

As it landed in the southbound lane of the freeway, it hit four cars. One of its wings got caught behind an Audi SUV.

The plane’s impact on the car trapped Evie temporarily, but she was able to get out by crawling over the center console. Both the child and Roberts suffered injuries.

Meanwhile, two people on board the plane were not hurt.

An investigation into the crash is underway.

Avoid unexpected plane crashes by getting the proper maintenance done on the plane. Check the weather forecast at departing and arriving airports. Manage your risks, and do not make bad decisions.
