USMC Lance Cpl. Cristian Banuelos Dies in Overturned Crash on 5 Freeway near Las Pulgas Road

 
OCEANSIDE, CA (June 18, 2024) — USMC Lance Cpl. Cristian Banuelos died in an overturned accident on the 5 Freeway near Las Pulgas Road.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal single-car crash happened around 5:45 a.m. Saturday. For an unknown reason, USMC Lance Cpl. Cristian Banuelos lost control of a northbound BMW 440i. Subsequently, the BMW swerved to the left and struck a center guardrail before overturning and hitting an emergency call box and a barbed wire fence.
 
Subsequently, paramedics responded and confirmed the Mount Vernon, Wash., man deceased at the scene. A 21-year-old male passenger riding in the BMW was taken to a trauma center with serious injuries and a 19-year-old woman reported minor injuries.
 
Authorities did not say what led to the accident that happened near the northern San Diego County military base. However, they are looking into whether DUI factored into the cause.
