Early Morning Fiery Accident Involving Semi Truck on 40 Freeway Kills Two People

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, CA (December 29, 2021) – Two people died in a fiery accident on 40 Freeway early Wednesday morning.

The accident happened just after 1:00 a.m. on December 22, roughly three miles west of Kelbaker Road, an entrance to the Mojave National Preserve. According to the California Highway Patrol, a 61-year-old Canadian man was driving a semi truck hauling a trailer westbound on the freeway. For unknown reasons, he let the truck drift to the left and go over the dirt median.

The semi then hit a Chevrolet Colorado, crashed into a guardrail and overturned down a steep embankment, where it caught fire. The pickup also bust into flames on the freeway.

Both the driver and passenger inside the burning Colorado died at the scene. They were not yet identified.

Meanwhile, the driver and passenger of the semi both suffered moderate injuries and were taken to Barstow Community Hospital.

Officials said drugs and alcohol were not contributing factors in the crash. Further investigation is underway.
