Car Accident on Girard Avenue in San Diego Sends Couple to Hospital

 
SAN DIEGO, CA (May 14, 2021) – Two people were taken to the hospital after a car accident on Girard Avenue in San Diego Wednesday morning, May 12.
 
The accident happened around 10:00 a.m. in the back of Harry’s Coffee Shop at 7545 Girard Avenue. According to the San Diego Fire Department, an elderly couple was in the car when the driver mistook the gas pedal for the brake. He stepped on the gas pedal and drove the car into the rear of the coffee shop.
 
Paramedics took the couple to Scripps Hospital in La Jolla for treatment of unspecified injuries. A third person, an employee at the shop, had minor injuries.
 
Firefighters discovered a gas leak while responding to the crash. Businesses on either side of the coffee shop were evacuated because of the leak, which fire crews stopped by turning off the supply.
 
A city building inspector was called to evaluate the integrity of the structure. The county health department was also notified, which is standard protocol for incidents at food establishments.
 
At this time, SDFD is investigating the accident.
