Passenger Timothy McGregor Dies after Driver Crashes into Boat Towed by Vehicle in Otay Mesa

 
OTAY MESA, CA (November 3, 2021) — A man died after being hit by a car on Highway 905 while trying to fix the trailer of a small fishing boat being towed by a pickup on October 30.
 
Officials identified the victim as 78-year-old Timothy McGregor of San Diego, according to the San Diego Department of the Medical Examiner.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened around 6:45 a.m. on Saturday. A Chevy truck was towing the boat when the hitch became detached east of 5 Freeway, partially blocking the slow lane of traffic.
 
A passenger from inside the Chevy – identified as McGregor – exited the vehicle and attempted to fix the issue. At the same time, the driver of a Honda CRV approaching the stopped vehicle failed to observe it blocking the lane and the front of the Honda struck the rear of the fishing boat/trailer.
 
The impact pushed the boat and trailer into the passenger, causing fatal injuries. McGregor died at the scene, according to paramedics.
 
After crashing into the boat and trailer, the Honda continued forward and struck the rear of the Chevy.
 
The driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. However, it was not immediately known if fog had reduced visibility on the roadway and factored into the crash.
 
No other information was released. The CHP was investigating the accident.
