21-Year-Old Sonoma State University Student Dies in Pedestrian Accident on East Cotati Avenue

ROHNERT PARK, CA (July 6, 2021) – A student was killed in a pedestrian accident on East Cotati Avenue in Rohnert Park Monday afternoon.

The accident happened around noon on July 5. According to the Rohnert Park Police Department, the student was crossing East Cotati Avenue from Wolf Den Plaza toward the university, when a westbound black 2015 Ford Fusion struck him.

The victim, a 21-year-old Rohnert Park man, died at the scene. He was a Sonoma State University student.

Witnesses reported the incident as a hit-and-run when the car left the area after hitting the pedestrian. However, police said the driver called authorities within minutes to say that he had just been involved in a collision.

Police said it appears that the student was not in a crosswalk when he stepped off the center median and the driver, 19-year-old Ronald Gaither of Penngrove, could not stop for him.

Further investigation is underway.
