Veteran Pilot Sherman Smoot Dies after Vintage Airplane Crashes in Shafter

 
SHAFTER, CA (September 6, 2022)Sherman Smoot died in a vintage plane crash in Shafter on Friday morning, September 2.
 
The fatal crash happened 10:50 a.m. at Minter Field Airport. According to the Kern County Fire Department, Smoot was flying a World War II plane, a Yakovlev Yak-11, for a test fight when the aircraft crashed shortly after take off.
 
Smoot tried to turn the plane around when it crashed into a field half a mile northwest of Minter Field. He was only person on board and died in the crash.
 
Smoot was a fighter pilot for the Navy During the Vietnam War, flew airliners for Continental for 28 years, and a flight instructor. He was slated to compete in the Reno Air Races in just two weeks from now.
 
The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Association are handling the investigation.
