18-Month-Old Child Dies in Modesto Hit-and-Run, Santiago Martinez Arrested

 
MODESTO, CA (May 23, 2021) – Police arrested Santiago Martinez after a fatal hit-and-run in Modesto late Friday afternoon, May 21.
 
The incident happened a little after 5:00 p.m. on Glenn Avenue, just east of Ustick Road. According to the California Highway Patrol, the 19-year-old suspect was driving a 2021 Toyota sedan when he struck an 18-month-old boy who walked onto Glenn Avenue.
 
Paramedics arrived soon after and rushed the child to a nearby trauma center, where the victim later died.
 
Meanwhile, Martinez then drove away after the crash. Witnesses followed him before catching up to him about a mile away.
 
CHP officers arrested Martinez for felony hit-and-run. They said drugs or alcohol do not appear to be involved.
 
An investigation is ongoing.
