Bicyclist Suffers Severe Injuries after Hit by DUI Driver in Browns Valley, Richard Zapata Arrested

 
BROWNS VALLEY, CA (June 6, 2021) – Rebecca Schmidt suffers severe injuries in a DUI accident in the Yuba County foothills Sunday last week.
 
The accident happened around noon on May 30. According to the California Highway Patrol, 34-year-old Richard Zapata was driving a Subaru Forester eastbound on Scott Forbes Road at an unknown speed. At the same time, the 56-year-old victim from Browns Valley was riding her bicycle on Scott Forbes Road in the same direction.
 
For unknown reasons, Zapata’s vehicle allegedly struck Schmidt, causing her severe injuries to her lower leg.
 
After the crash, Zapata drove Schmidt to her house where emergency personnel were called. A helicopter ambulance then transported Schmidt to Sutter Roseville Hospital for treatment.
 
Meanwhile, Zapata sustained a small laceration to his lip. Police later arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence.
 
The crash is still under investigation.
