Police Arrest DUI Wrong-Way Driver Joseph Madarang after Fatally Striking Pedestrian in Downtown LA

 
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES, CA (November 20, 2022) – Police arrested Joseph Hansen Madarang after driving the wrong way while drunk in downtown Los Angeles and slamming into two pedestrians, killing one of them on Friday.
 
The fatal crash happened around 11:40 p.m. on November 18, at Ninth and Olive streets. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the 39-year-old suspect from Los Angeles was driving a silver Lexus IS200t the wrong way and struck two men who were crossing in a marked crosswalk.
 
Both pedestrians catapulted into the air and landed on the street from the impact.
 
Madarang continued westbound and crashed head-on with another vehicle, which was waiting at a red light at the opposite side of the intersection. He also crashed a tractor trailer.
 
Responding paramedics rushed the two pedestrians to a hospital, where one of them, a 36-year-old man, succumbed to his injuries.
 
The second pedestrian, a 32-year-old man, suffered severe, but non-life-threatening injuries.
 
Police later arrested Madarang on suspicion of felony drunk driving.
 
Madarang was being held in lieu of $130,000 bail at the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles, authorities said.
