Driver Flees, Passenger Dies after Stolen Car Strikes Tree and Catches Fire near Meridian Avenue in San Jose
SAN JOSE, CA (June 6, 2023) – A passenger died after a fiery hit-and-run crash near Meridian Avenue and Woodruff Drive in San Jose early Monday morning.
The fatal crash happened around 1:26 a.m. on June 5. According to the San Jose Police Department, the driver of a Kia sedan lost control of the car and struck a tree.
After the crash, the driver fled the scene on foot leaving their passenger behind.
The sedan burst into flames, and emergency personnel found the passenger dead inside.
The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office withheld the victim’s identity pending family notification.
Police later learned that the Kia was reported stolen and it may have been speeding prior to the crash.
